ImageRecently Bibles International hosted its fourth Good Neighbor Seminar at two locations in Michigan. This event is a means of strengthening ties with and expressing gratitude for churches and individuals – neighbors – in our area. During the seminar this year, attendees gained a greater appreciation of our English Bible. Viewing editions and facsimiles of pioneer English translation work fostered a greater appreciation for the rich 500-year heritage that is ours as English-speaking Christians.

The two seminar lecturers, Mike Grant and Gene Fisher, described the great personal sacrifice of men such as William Tyndale who labored to translate the Bible into English for the majority of his life. Although Tyndale was the translator, he was aided by friends like John Rogers who carried on the work after Tyndale's death. Another man, Humphrey Monmouth financially facilitated the first printing of Tyndale’s Scriptures.

Tyndale’s work culminated in his being burned at the stake for his “heretical” work of putting God’s Word into the common language of his fellow countrymen. Before being strangled and burned at the stake, he prayed that the Lord would open the eyes of the King of England, so that one day English speakers might own and legally read a copy of God’s Word in their own language.

If the Lord tarries, in the year 2507 perhaps the Tenek Indians in the mountains of Mexico or the Falam Chin tribe in Myanmar will attend a seminar on the history of God's Word in their language. There on the table might be a copy of the Bibles International New Testament printed hundreds of years earlier.

With the blessing that God has given us through the Bible in our language, there comes a personal responsibility to assist others in receiving God's enduring Word in their languages. We are in desperate need of modern-day examples of Tyndale, Rogers, and Monmouth. To have a part in a ministry similar to theirs is a significant challenge. May we be equal to the task.
