In July and August, two literacy workshops were conducted in the Sango language in the Central African Republic by Clarissa Barton.

The CAR is Baptist Mid-Mission's oldest field, and it has five four-year Bible Schools.  "Teaching Reading" is in the four-year Bible School program, but there were no qualified teachers to teach the course. In the CAR, the teaching of reading is a local church ministry. Many have not had the privilege of attending school, and far too many in the pews cannot read their Sango Bibles.

Those who attended the workshop were all Bible School teachers.  They in turn would teach the prospective pastors and their wives how to conduct literacy classes in their local church.
