The Songhai language is the language of the Songhai people who still live along the Niger River.  It has become the "linguq franca" for the majority of other tribal people who also live in the northern half of Mali and western Niger.  It is dominant language spoken from Mopti in Mali to Niami in Niger.

Mansa Musa, one of the emperors of the Mali Empire made a pilgramage to Mecca in 1324 A.D.  He brought back with him Moroccan architects and scholars to Timbukto and Djenne.  As a result these cities became centers of Islamic learning.  Timbukto is still recognized as having one of teh oldest and largest collections of Islamic literature.
