Translation Tools Specialist Position Description

Position Title: TRANSLATION TOOLS SPECIALIST

Objectives of Position:

1. Good functional and personal interaction with participants in Text Production and in other relationships with Bibles International, Baptist Mid-Missions, and national groups.

2. Assistance in the production of translation helps which are of the highest quality, conforming to Bibles International standards and policies.

Responsible to:

1. Projects Manager for project organization and status.

2. Chief Language Consultant for assignments and textual matters.

Responsibilities:

1. Oversee the process of development of all translation tools, i.e. models, checklists, software packages, manuals, parallel checklists, and other tools deemed necessary for the accurate and timely completion of text production projects.

2. Continue to upgrade personal exegetical, linguistic and translation skills.

3. Be available to represent Bibles International in churches and other meetings as schedule and resources permit.

4. Work with the Chief Language Consultant and others as assigned to verify the accuracy and usefulness of the translation helps.

Qualifications:

The objectives of the position will be fulfilled most successfully by a person with these qualifications.

Personal commitment to Jesus Christ, to His commission, and to His Word.

Spiritual and emotional maturity demonstrated by integrity, objectivity, and intellectual honesty.

Interest and ability in biblical exegesis.

Ability to spend long hours on detail work.

Open mind to non-traditional ways of looking at language and translation.


2. Academic preparation:

Master's degree in Bible, biblical languages, Bible translation, or biblical studies.

Reading in translation theory.

Reading ability in French, Spanish, or Portuguese.

Fluency and academic understanding of the language in which helps are being prepared.

3. Experience:

Biblical exegesis and teaching.

Strong, developed ability in biblical languages.

Advanced use of Bible concordance software, particularly BibleWorks, and computer literacy.

Short-term missionary experience

Missionary appointment by Baptist Mid-Missions.
