With the world’s eyes focused on Myanmar, a country mourning the loss of thousands and seeking to keep thousands more alive in the wake of Hurricane Nargis, we at Bibles International pray all the more earnestly for the Burmese Christians with whom we work. Their strength in adversity has always inspired us, but never so much as in the face of this recent disaster. Baptist Mid-Missions has designated thousands of dollars in relief funds, being distributed by BI’s coordinator for our India and Myanmar translation projects. His Indian “complexion” has given him entrance where others cannot go. Bibles International is working with a sister agency to print portions of our translated Scriptures, to be distributed along with needed supplies. We share with you excerpts – in unedited Burmese English – from emails sent by Paul Van Hre, Bibles International Myanmar Society Coordinator. Home was many places to Colin Smith. Home was his family, his students, his work. But home was especially the presence of God in his life, and because of that, he is now forever truly home. The BI staff was shocked to hear of Dr. Smith's death on Sunday, June 22. His life was abundant, filled with opportunities to use the gifts God gave him. One of those gifts and loves was biblical languages. Colin used that gift in the classroom, but he also used it "in the field." He was an adjunct translation consultant for Bibles International, taking several trips to northeast India to work on our projects there. His height and complexion made him stand out in that part of the world, and he was well-loved and well-respected by all who worked with him.
